Farming is a bit different when you’re in the Mid-Delta South. Row spacing, planting populations, irrigation, soil conditions, the weather, you name it. Conditions are unlike what many growers in the Corn Belt experience.
“There’s something to do every day,” notes Stine® grower Logan Douglas. Logan is a third-generation farmer, born and raised in Wynne, Arkansas. He lives on the same farm where his dad grew up, and where they now farm 1,800 acres together, most of which Logan has taken over, including 300 acres of corn, 300 acres of rice and 600 acres of soybeans.
“In Arkansas, you plant, you string out polypipe to get ready to water. In the water season, you’re at every field, watering two to three times a day. There’s something to do every single day.”
Luckily, Logan has help from his long-time friend and classmate, Stine ISR Levi Arens, when things get busy.
“I’ve been planting Stine now for three years. I got with Levi. I heard he was selling for Stine, and we decided on a few beans that I’d plant…Levi helped me get started planting Stine, and it was the best decision I ever made on my farm.”
Initially, Logan started with Stine soybeans. He liked the trait options that Stine provided him and was excited to try Stine LibertyLink® soybeans after dealing with years of pigweed issues.
“We’ve got a big problem with pigweeds. Being able to spray that Liberty® and take care of that pigweed is a big deal to us. We can control pigweed with Liberty.”
Last year, Logan had some of the best yields he’s ever seen since farming with Stine. This year, he planted Stine 38LEO2, 44LH22 and 49LD02 brand soybeans, and he’s right on track to have outstanding yields again.
His success with Stine soybeans lead him to consider Stine brand corn after he realized that they needed some rotation in the mix. Dry lands and drainage weren’t boding well for his rice acres, and high winds were a concern for tall corn, so he switched to Stine Agrisure® corn.
“In Arkansas, we face some high winds sometimes, and my (Stine) corn was standing up still after 60-mile per hour winds. Most of my neighbor’s corn was laying on the ground, which made it hard to harvest.”
Several lines of Stine Agrisure corn feature shorter plant height, stronger stalks and outstanding insect control, something Logan notes is helping control corn earworm on their farm — a farm he plans to stay on for many years to come.
“I was born and raised here in Wynne. I grew up on the farm, the same farm my dad grew up on. I hope to raise my son on the same farm I grew up on. Maybe one day I’ll be farming that ground that my dad’s got, and after that, maybe my son will be farming it.”
